Her research-led practice considers the complex relationship between the body, knowledge, and representation. Signalling back to her history in dance, she uses choreography, photography, moving image and text to rethink conventional approaches to image-making. Increasingly, her work operates at the intersection of art and science – interweaving diverse forms of knowing through a lens of intersectional feminist discourse.Her work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally, in group and solo exhibitions at institutions and festivals such as Derby QUAD (UK), Wilhelm-Hack-Museum (DE), Museum of London (UK), Hanes Art Gallery (USA), Peckham 24 (UK), A Performance Affair (BG), Summerhall (UK) &amp; The Nunnery Gallery (UK). She studied BA (Hons) Photography at London College of Communication, MA Photography at Royal College of Art and PGCert Creative Education at University for the Creative Arts. Echoing ideas that plasticity enables the brain to be simultaneously formative and formable, the body is proposed as a site of both knowledge production and knowledge exchange. The performers are continually forming new connections and pathways, working together to hold, fold, weave, curve and hinge. Moving with the body, the camera too becomes a performer – tracking movement but also creating it. The exchange between performers and camera creates a new architectural reality which is in a constant state of transformation. In the age of hyper-productivity, principles of neuroplasticity have been capitalised on with suggestions of how we might ‘rewire’ our brains to become more efficient. Plassein invites an alternative reading that moves away from the unrelenting pressure to produce and consume, with an emphasis instead on learning, growing and exchanging. The 21st century way of living is severely influenced by the complex interdependency of people, the environment and technological processes. Technology allows us to enhance our bodies, to have immediate access to information and only communicate with like-minded people, and to use the earth's resources for our own needs. Despite these advantages, these developments also lead to a many of disadvantages: Algorithms and filter bubbles influence our beliefs and actions. Not all people have equal access to resources; nature suffers from overexploitation. Plassein is featured in Davenport’s installation as part of the exhibition ‘Shaping Data’, which is one of six exhbitions featured in the biennale.&nbsp; Shaping Data explores how the widespread use of digital technologies affects our physical bodies, frames our opinions, and alters human interactions. We spend lots of our time with our devices sharing often personal data that fuels algorithms. In turn, these algorithmic processes decide what we see and hear. This immediate feedback creates the illusion that we are in control of our own lives and the lives of others. What Happens in that Moment?’ is an artist book exploring the process of training an Artificial Intelligence (AI) neural network to perform a working memory task. The book is a response to the SMQB research project ‘Memory Removal in AI Networks’ where the goal was to study the mechanisms of active forgetting in AI to help us better understand this function in human brains. The book interweaves text, photography, found imagery and transcripts of conversations, alongside interpretations of the model’s training process through the ‘comments’ found in the code. The book reflects on the process of training the AI model and includes ‘chapters’ to mirror the different phases of the project. This project also prompted me to reflect on human and machine learning more broadly, and so references to memory storage systems and scaffolding are made throughout the book. Traditionally these formations were designed to act as backdrops for framing the principal dancers, however the predictability and uniformity of the movements left no space for the individual expression. In addition, the background dancers often find themselves stood on stage in complete stillness for extended periods of time. However, there is of course movement in stillness. But also, how slow can you move before it ceases to be movement? In the Gap Between uses these structures as a starting point, but instead embraces the slippages and improvisations that occur when movements filter through different bodies. Moving as one, the performers move in a slow, synchronised queue-like formation with each interpreting the movement offered by the performer in front.&nbsp; By slowing movement down, the work invites the performers to fully explore a range of often-overlooked gestures, whilst simultaneously challenging audience spectatorship.Development of this work was generously supported by Summerhall Gallery and Webber Gallery. Exploring the body as both a material and apparatus, each choreographic segment explores this fragmentation through exercise-style sequences. These are: elbow joint, knee lever, hipbone, jawline, and shoulder socket. The two performers move in Pas de Deux (Dance of Two) — a term borrowed from dance, where traditionally the female dancer is supported by a male partner for lifts, turns, and balancing steps to create the illusion of stillness. The performers are simultaneously for and against one another, with each exercise oscillating between moments of intimacy and violence. Awards Featured in Vogue Ukraine Art Issue, 2019.
